This place always has some of the best and most authentic Japanese food whenever I order from here. The chicken karaage is so good. The grilled skewer meat selection is amazing. The chicken katsu and rotating specials have never disappointed either.
I would give 0 stars if the option was available (experience was so bad that I had to make a Yelp account). The food is mid, service is unpleasant and the food is expensive for what it is. I believe in tipping, but not when I have to order through a tablet and not get checked on at all. Mind you, I tipped 15% for my order given that:
1. Staff was rude.
2. Never got checked on compared to other tables.
3. They have a sign stating that tipping is a MUST. My girlfriend ordered a coke by itself and they DEMANDED a tip. The waitress (who ignored us all night beforehand) said that if we did not tip for the can of coke they would make our order to go? We had already tipped on our order and just wanted a single coke on the side separately. All it takes is to open a fridge and take out a can and that's it. It's not like we asked the waitress to change the formula of the coke. Silly waitress, L restaurant. Tokyo fast food on Brockton ave (a few streets down) is way better. If you want a place that begs you for a tip and gives you inadequate service, then come here!
I understand the importance of tipping. I had left a standard 20% tip for our entire order to begin with. Afterwards, I decided to order a can of soda (read: not served or otherwise prepared) and pay a separate $3.86 check unrelated to my first big order of food.
I was not going to tip again just for a passive-aggressive staffer to transport a can of Coke from their fridge to my table that is right outside their BOH. I tried not tipping at all. Unbeknownst to me, the "waitress" (they don't take your order or check up on you while you eat) was watching me from behind, then interjected with a "I don't recommend you do that. I will have to make your order to go." I was baffled. I told her I already tipped for our actual bigger order. The Coke was just an after thought; a completely separate $3.86 check. I fought it. She begrudgingly backed down. She brought me a Coke with no separate cup for ice while my partner received an ice cup with his drink. Food was much too average for the energy wasted on tip-begging. Anything else neighboring Izakaya beats it in flavor and service.
If you want to be badgered for a tip then come here.
A go-to for casual/late night dining and yummy comfort food! Sasaya is a cozy and authentic izakaya that offers a variety of Japanese tapas and drinks. Their kushiyaki is especially good and their prices are reasonable (for today's standards). I personally like their system of ordering via tablet at your table and our usual waitress is always friendly, thoughtful and efficient. If you order takeout, the packaging is done with care and hot items remain hot for a while. Their desserts are also quite delicious! Highly recommend!
I walked in and saw 2 worker laughing and smiling like it was great soon as the waitress talked to me all that went away like I was telling them a family member died or something, some of the worst customer service I have ever encountered.
Hot dishes are good and comfy, the chicken skewer was really great. Yes, the space is a bit rundown but honestly I think that’s a vibe. It’s charming.
They did change the space since I last came here, though. I prefer how it was before, more open. Like this is good for romantic dates or meetings because there’s privacy. I wish they had the servers come in and talk to you though instead of just ordering everything on a tablet.
I’ve come back to this place many times now and ordered many items on their menu. Never have I ever been disappointed (except one time when I ordered delivery, idk why the delivery food was just not as good as the dine-in).
Also, their hoji-cha pudding *chef’s kiss*
Been coming here since 2021, and it’s such a lovely place. The atmosphere is so cozy, the food is yummy, definitely get some skewers here, and the drinks are decently priced. I typically get an order of kitsune udon of the mental butter udon, and share sashimi with my friends. Service is good, too! Never had a problem here.
So
Unsatisfied with the service/food and the sushi. Ordered one sushi for delivery with 3 sodas. They didn’t send one of them and the order arrived late despite paying extra for fast delivery. Also, didn’t care to provide chopsticks or any soy sauce. They charge for soy sauce and the sushi was awful. The smallest quantity sushi I have ever had especially at this price. Highly DONT recommend this place.
BEWARE: EXPIRED FISH WARNING ⚠️ they sell expired fish here. I recently got the salmon special. Big mistake. Never in my life have I tasted such awful, disgusting, and horrid fish, let alone food. This was a nightmare. People on the restaurant business always warn not to buy specials; that it’s just a ploy to sell you old food for cheap rather than throwing it away. They’re not always right… but this time they were. STAY AWAY, unless you want to risk getting served expired fish like I did. It is sad to me that businesses serve expired food, especially when it is fish. This place is a disgrace to sushi establishments.
The food was delicious. They made some of the best chicken karaage I've ever had. Spicy edamamae and takoyaki were very well-made. However, forced tipping isn't an acceptable business practice and they stated they would ask us to leave if we didn't tip at minimum 18% with each order. That felt very heavy handed and no longer made us feel like customers.

The yellow tail hand roll i order was about the size and shape of a big Tootsie roll.
The spider roll tastes as expected, but the roll was tiny. For the price it was not worth it.
