The kiosk that rented the audio guide was already closed and they had taken my passport for collateral. The security guard told me I had to return the next day which wouldn’t have worked because we fly out the next morning. After explaining in french several times that it was not possible for us to return because of our early departure, he just laughed at me and said ‘tant pixs pour vous, c’est fermer pour le soir’ I asked several times for the phone number of someone to call he finally called the head of security who had it. When giving me instructions on how to get to the office, he asked if I spoke french! Oui, bien sûr! We had just had an entire exchange in french.
Although they were very rude and dismissive, we enjoyed the second floor more than the first, the modern architectural displays were fascinating and beautifully displayed. Too bad we didn’t have time to really check it out.
We’re sorry that the end of your visit was impacted by the museum’s closing procedures. While the Cité officially closes at 7:00 pm, our staff begins a gradual closing of the galleries around 6:35–6:40 pm to ensure a smooth and secure exit for all visitors. We acknowledge that this timing may not have been clearly stated when you began the tour, and we are in the process of updating our information materials accordingly.
Regarding your experience with the audio guide return and the recovery of your passport, we truly regret that the interaction with our staff was not more courteous or helpful. This does not reflect the level of welcome we strive to provide, and your comments will be shared with the teams involved for immediate follow-up.
Despite these issues, we are very glad to hear you enjoyed the second-floor galleries. The modern architectural displays are indeed among our highlights, and we hope you’ll have the chance to return one day to explore them more fully.
Safe travels back to Canada.

We are sincerely sorry for the frustration you experienced during your visit, and we fully understand how upsetting this situation must have been, especially given your travel schedule.
To ensure the return of the audio guide equipment, we ask visitors to leave a piece of ID at the counter, as a standard procedure. The museum closes at 7:00 pm, and our teams begin guiding visitors toward the exit starting at 6:40 pm to allow a calm and complete closure. We acknowledge that this may not have been clearly communicated during your arrival, and we are currently working on updating our website and visitor signage to avoid such misunderstandings in the future.
Regarding the situation with the security staff and your passport, we regret that the interaction was not handled with more care and clarity from the start. Please be assured that your feedback will be shared with the appropriate teams so that we can continue improving our service and ensure our visitors feel respected and supported at every step.
We hope you were still able to enjoy part of your visit and wish you safe travels back to Canada.
