Lovely victorian inn in Ferndale, on the main street within minutes walk of everything. Charming and well kept bed and breakfast. Front desk and staff all very friendly, not sure what prior reviews experience stemmed from, but we had a great stay and would stay again if we were to find ourselves in Ferndale.
I will never recommend Shaw House to our out of town visitors again. Besides everything else I would write, the entry door opens inward and is very hard to open; a disaster waiting to happen. Mouldy smell, bad stairs, and a rude encounter with staff all in the 5 minutes I was there, helping my friend up those stairs with her luggage.
A mean old woman runs this stuffy joint that deserves no more than 2 stars. The photos are very misleading to what the actual let down experience is. Would never come back here. Save your time and money and go elsewhere with better vibes and much better clean decor.
A very unhappy woman (can' call her a lady as she was everything but to us) is running this place. It is rare to meet someone that viscious and out to destroy people's special days here. From what I heard from the townspeople, she is locally known for her malicous ways. i did not hold back to share the specifics of our bad experience here with them. Unfortunate, but would never consider coming back here. The female owner has some serious psychological issues that should be addressed. As far as the interiors are concerend, they were ok, very dodgy 1980's take on Victorian not an updated cool version. Some of the grout was moldy. Some lamps did not work and we let them know but nobody seemed to mind. The property presents much better than it was. The staff seems to operate on fear. Such an unhappy place, shame.
Stayed one night on our road trip. We stayed in the garden room which is a small room with two beds. Everything was adequate, but the room made both of us sneeze. Our bathroom was clean, and just for us, but down the hall. There was a nice breakfast. There were also some comfortable public spaces. There were several other guests, but most folks kept to themselves. It felt a bit like a night in a museum.
Town is two steps away. Nice grounds.
