I’m a huge fan of unique stays, historical hotels and architecture but this is beyond a major disappointment! Number 1- the smell is absolutely unbearable! It smells like sulfur or raw sewage or both! It’s so bad that I had to put my hand over my nose and mouth! It’s gag worthy! It actually seems unsuitable to be renting this place out. The room didn’t smell until I opened the closet and it smelled like diarrhea so I chose not to use the extra blanket or pillows. 2-the bed is rock hard. 3- you can hear everything from the neighbors room and actually see light leaking between the cracks of the door between the rooms. I had to turn on the fan to drown out the noise. 4-the staff (and I’m kind of thinking this poor girl hates her job so I don’t really blame her and she’s only worked there a few months) every answer was “the hotel is 100 years old”. But my house is over 100 years old and it doesn’t smell like this! ALSO the place is in the desert where water is scarce and you are told to let the shower run for 15 minutes to let it warm up! Get the pipes fixed! This is ridiculous! Unfortunately you can’t cancel your booking after 48 hours or I would have. If you’re looking for a cheap place go a little further down the road to the Longstreet Casino, not much farther but it’s clean and it doesn’t stink, it has lots of character and history and they have a restaurant and a resident casino cat named Jackpot!
I really wanted to like this place and I was excited to stay here but I’m soooooooo bummed now. And I’m stuck here one more night! Maybe things were better before the flooding but they need to get this place fixed or close it as it is a health hazard. Just say no!

Famous historic opera House and hotel unfortunately has been in physical decline over many years. Chipping paint and old plumbing but the rooms were sturdy. Warm enough staff very friendly. Even a little bit of coffee in the morning...
Definitely worth the stay but do not expect a five-star brand new

For anyone visiting Death Valley, this is a must see stop or at least, in my opinion anyway. Even though Marta Becket is no longer here to entertain us with her grace and beauty, her incredible talent can still be enjoyed and appreciated by taking a tour of the opera house, see the beautiful murals or even better, attending one the many shows that are still performed within it. Of course, a stay in one of the many historic rooms is always a pleasure as well.

It looks a bit depressed, and was not very populated during my brief visit. . .
