Great location right at the base of the village and a short walk to the gondola. Didn't have to drive at all to the resort and deal with the parking / parking shuttles, so perfect for skiers.
Staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. We didn't try the clock tower cellar or Petras but will on our next visit.
Rooms are comfortable and clean. Not at all a complaint, but for early-to-bedders the weekend can bring some noise from the patrons at the bar and restaurant.
Will definitely stay again when we are in Mammoth!
The gondola up to Mammoths Canyon lodge is right across the street. Right out the entrance is Petras, which is an awesome fine dining restaurant with a wine bar. 30 feet further is a great burger joint. The hotel is on the aging side. Quaint but well kept. There is a jacuzzi on the first floor which is a great soak after skiing. There is a restaurant on the first floor. There are stairs up and down.
I can't comment on the rooms, I ate at Petra's. I love the butternut squash gnocchi in mushroom sauce, the Ceasar, and the crab cakes. ???? The array of wines are a delight, plus you can taste before buying. My favorite place to dine in Mammoth. All it lacks is a view.

Very conveniently located in the village, reasonably priced with plenty of parking. Rooms are nice for an older hotel, definitely has that old world charm with nice simple vintage alpine decor. Racks for hanging your skis/boards.
The only downside is that the only microwave is downstairs, so for cheapskates like me you'll have to hike to heat up your food. Maybe the other units in the back buildings have one in the room?
I've been wanting to stay at the Alpenhof for years! I finally had a chance to experience it this year. Hear me out: In the past I'd take the quality inn because of breakfast or a cheaper price. Or other lodges that looked decently newer or clean but the price was lower....
The Alpenhof: is not that much more expensive than my other stays at all. And the tiny bit more that it is makes up a hundred fold because you literally can walk across the street to take the gondola and access the mountain, you dont need to drive and park and end up walking further from where you parked. If your people are hungry or bored they can walk right over to all the shops and action amd no one is left at the hotel stranded without a car waiting for the peeps to come back. They have a sauna ???? and a jaccuzzie. A bar that is lively amd a really nice restaurant on premises.
And! The rooms are cozy! I LOVED my room, little fire place little wall divider living room, full privacy in the back corner and thay have little cabins available too full mini house that you can park right at the front door!
Martha is the best, she is the homie and knows how to run that place and interact with guests, the other younger lady, not so much.
I would saw the Alpenhof has more of a resort type cabin feel than hotel. You for sure feel like you are in the mountains, not a random run down or cookie cutter chain hotel.
It is charming amd has its own personality, I recommend this spot over any hotel spot I've ever stayed in at mammoth. Nothing beats the Alpenhof :)
This is a great place to stay due to its location right across from the village at mammoth where you can catch the gondola to canyon lodge.
I stayed in the two bedroom duplex in the back which is nice and secluded. The decor is dated and the kitchen is plain but serviceable. The combo gas fireplace/heater in the living room is a nice touch but wasn't working when I was there recently. The bathroom is larger then it was the last time I was there and the shower is a great size.
The staff was very helpful and made up for the short comings there. The front desk personnel made some suggestions for my family to do. Now I just have to figure out how to get reservations to the restaurant before they book up.. Lol
We had a very comfortable king room in the main lodge, a little noisy from the stairs but quiet at night when it counts. Fridge in room and microwave downstairs were nice. Basically across the street from the Village Gondola.
We had a great experience at this lodge. It is right next to the gondola and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Reasonable pricing and the sauna was nice.
My only suggestion was that they discontinued the continental breakfast during covid and should bring that back.
