Stepping to its doors you can easily imagine the vibrant meeting point for artists it once must have been. The restaurant was established during medieval times and prides itself to be the longest running restaurant (or probably tavern in its older days) of Zurich.
The vibe and the food are refreshingly unpretentious. The food for sure is not stuck in those times.
I highly recommend the mini cheese fondue n combination with the iconic ‘gold bürli’ -high quality handmade roll -free from egg or any additives- with a century-old tradition. What a brilliant idea to serve cheese fondue in form of an appetizer-sized teaser. Normal sized cheese fondue often leaves one feeling having been hit by a cheese sledgehammer and regretting (some) of the experience afterwards.
The cheese, sourced from the fromagerie of the Gstaad Palace, hails from that region which is rightly famous for its alpine cheeses (and rich history of thereof). Think Emmentaler & Gruyere…
My main course was a Wienerschnitzel with French fries, cranberries & lemon, perfectly perfectly puffed up to embody the essence of "soufflieren," a term that describes breaded coating achieving a light and airy perfection upon frying.
No visit to Münsterhöfli should end without the delectable Cremeschnitte (custard millefeuille) for two. Light puff pastry (millefeuille means ‘1000 sheets) with a wonderful light custard creme.
Last but definitely not least I should mention the wonderful staff making the whole experience so very enjoyable. I'll be back.
