Lopsided building so the floors are slanted, smelly, toilet paper in the halls, noisy room on street, the door sticks, the shared bathroom is filthy, the room is crumbling and there is creepy “art”. Would give this a negative star if I could.
It's like sleeping in an art museum or an artist's sketchbook which, after seeing the pictures and reading other reviews, was exactly what I was looking for. Plus the cat is cute, the coffee in the lobby is good, and the price is great for the location. It was super clean too. My partner and I had a fun time looking at all the art!
Old but clean. Crazy artwork.. wish our room had more! One of two beds had very comfy memory foam mattress, and one of 4 pillows was memory foam. I wish there was a sink in the hallway toilet so I wouldn’t have to return to the room to wash my hands. We did hear a lot of street noise at night but that comes with being close to a lot of things. The matcha place downstairs is excellent and there is a convenient bagel place as well
This place is amazing. For the past 4 years we keep coming back here whenever we want to stay in the city. Rooms are inspiring- every time is a surprise what room youll get - feels like Christmas each time we check in to this hotel :)
Clean, comfortable beds, light on amenities but great location. What made a huge difference for me was the guy behind the desk, Chris from Argentina. Super friendly, recommended some great spots to eat, got us some extra blankets. The hotel is rough around the edges but we got 5 star service. Totally recommend.
The other guests were very shy. The whole place is like an antique. Great location, charming people, and only a couple of blocks from the subway. My stay was surprisingly very quiet, I'm not sure if I got lucky or if it's because it's right next to Baruch. The only extra accommodations from the staff outside of what is in the room are tea in the lobby and towels. Didn't see a single cockroach or bedbug anywhere in the whole place.
Bohemian indeed, well located and quirky Carlton Arms does a good dance between price and amenities. It is a hostel at heart but with private, spacious rooms (consider New York apartments) and communal amenities unless you spring for an ensuite. The tenement its housed in retains much of the original charm with the added artistic coating applied by quite a few different artists.
Be sure to give your room a check before selecting it, we peeked into a somewhat dizzying spiral room that may have been painful to spend considerable time in (thankfully you'll be out on the town of course). And in that vein keep an eye out for rooms in the midst of cleaning to take a look at the art. Some of it is very well done.
It's good policy to greet and pet Ned as you mount the main floor landing, he should be relaxing in the head chair after what could only be a busy night. You will notice his absence from sight as the day wears out.
It's a quirky spot that is blindingly well located at a great price. If you dont mind a bit of communality this might be a great choice for a home base.
