Gyeongbokgung (Korean: 경복궁; Hanja: 景福宮;

Gyeongbokgung Palace was built as the official palace of the Joseon dynasty by Yi Seong-gye, who becomes King Taejo and the founder of the new regime. Gyeongbokgung Palace is commonly referred to as the Northern Palace because its location in the north of Changdeokgung Palace in the east and Gyeonghuigung Palace in the west. Gyeongbokgung Palace is arguably the most beautiful and is the largest of all five palaces. Many Joseon kings were crowned here, including the 2nd King Jeongjong, 4th King Sejong, 6th King Danjong, 7th King Sejo, 9th King Seongjong, 11th King Jungjong, and the 13th King Myeongjong. The premises were once destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592-1598). However, all of the palace buildings were later restored under the leadership of Heungseondaewongun during the reign of King Gojong. The assassination of Empress Myeongseong, however, resulted in Gyeongbokgung Palace losing its function as a royal palace, eventually witnessing the downfall of the Joseon dynasty. Gyeongbokgung Palace retains the original Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, a prime example of Joseon architecture, and the Hyangwonjeong Pavilion and pond. The sculptures in the Geunjeongjeon Hall exemplify Joseon-era sculpture techniques. The west side of the area outside Heungnyemun Gate is occupied by the National Palace Museum of Korea, while the eastern side of Hyangwonjeong Pavilion within the Gyeongbokgung Palace is occupied by the National Folk Museum of Korea.

Very beautiful historical place in Seoul. Many people wear historical clothing, which gives the place a special flair. There is a lot to see, the buildings are in good condition and the gardens are beautifully planted.

Very crowded but ticketing and entry was fast. Relatively easy to take decent pictures despite the crowd.

Must See in Seoul!

As someone who appreciates history, architecture, and cultural experiences, Gyeongbokgung is a truly captivating place to visit. From the moment you enter the palace gates, you are transported back in time to the era of the Joseon Dynasty. The grandeur and elegance of the palace complex are evident in its meticulously maintained buildings and expansive courtyards.

The architecture of Gyeongbokgung is stunning, with its colorful roofs, intricate wooden carvings, and traditional motifs. The palace's main hall, Geunjeongjeon, is particularly impressive, showcasing the best of Korean palace architecture. Exploring the various pavilions, gates, and courtyards provides a sense of the scale and complexity of the palace.

One of the highlights of visiting Gyeongbokgung is the Changing of the Guard ceremony, with vibrant display of traditional Korean attire, music, and choreography. It takes place several times a day (around 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and sometimes at 3:00 PM). Exact times can vary, so it's best to check the palace's schedule in advance to plan your visit accordingly.

Disgustingly rude ticket booth staff!
When I purchased at the window it wasn't entirely clear that a single ticket covered my group. When I enquired whether the other members didn't require a pass (as seniors), the lady serving screamed at me that it was a ticket for everyone, as if I should have known straight away.
Firstly, it wasn't obvious, because the ticket's admission details were written in Hangul (which I can't read). Even if I could read it, was it really necessary to treat visitors this way.
And if the staff insist that this pathetic attitude is the correct way to conduct themselves, then I recommend avoiding this place altogether.
